箔軸承的開發始於 1970 年代初，以提供燃氣輪機軸的旋轉引導。 

箔片軸承，也稱為箔片空氣軸承，是一種空氣軸承，其表面由柔順的、彈簧加載的箔片軸頸襯裡支撐。一旦表面旋轉得足夠快，空氣就會將箔推離表面，這樣就不會發生接觸和磨損。表面和箔被空氣的高壓分開，空氣的高壓是由旋轉產生的，通過粘度效應將氣體吸入軸承。 

OAV 箔片軸承可以在最苛刻的系統下運行，無需外部供應。
